NMA’s strike ultimatum, misplaced, says Edo APC chieftain

The 21-day ultimatum by Edo State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) to Edo State Government to immediately address alleged decay in infrastructure and quality healthcare delivery system in the health sector has been described as misplaced, ill-motivated and a calculated attempt to blackmail Governor Adams Oshiomhole, a former labour leader.
Speaking in Lagos, a chieftain of the state chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Cephas Onaivi said: “Edo NMA is a microcosm of the population of the entire Edo people, who do not have the capacity to represent the people or dictate what they need at any particular time. They also do not love the state more than others.
“Edo State doctors cannot now insist that their wishes and fancies must be elevated to the status of laws and schemes of service in the health sector. These are a group of people who, individually, at one point or the other, begged to be employed by government and cannot now force government to employ more or furnish all the hospitals in the state with the state-of-the-art facilities before they would work.
“We must all rise to stop this budding impunity that Edo NMA, in collaboration with Edo Peoples Democratic Party are attempting to force down on our throats.
As things stand, we will lose confidence on a respected profession like NMA, Edo State chapter, because, they can no longer claim they are serving public interest, if at all, not by blackmail.
It would be recalled that Edo NMA had, last week, issued the state government, a 21-day ultimatum and threatened to go on strike, if at the expiration of the ultimatum, the government failed to address alleged decay of infrastructure in hospitals across the state and ensure qualitative health care delivery system.
According to Cephas, the issues raised by Edo NMA was beyond its scope to so determine. “You do not expect Oshiomhole at a fell swoop, after assuming office, to address the over 12 years decayed infrastructure in all sectors occasioned by the PDP led government. In which case, during this period, there was no record of strike by NMA against these successive governments,” he said.
I won’t be surprised, if by tomorrow, some market women association protest to government house with an ultimatum to Oshiomhole to within 7 days build all the market squares in the state with state of the art facilities. This is because, it is only in Edo state, you see husband and wife protesting to government house for Oshiomhole to resolve their disagreement over an over-salted pot of soup a previous day.
I want to call on NMA to retrace it’s steps, address the challenge of quackery in the profession and proffer solutions to addressing the challenges of governance instead of this misplaced, ill-motivated and calculated attempt to blackmail a former labour l
