The political impassé in Rivers State is daily gaining momentum, with pro and anti-Governor Chibuike Amaechi groups organising rallies in the state. Yesterday, the four Ikwerre speaking local government areas (Emuoha, Port Harcourt City, Ikwerre and Obio/Akpor) in the state, shut down Port Harcourt in a peaceful protest, against calls by pro-Amaechi supporters for the removal of the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mbu Joseph Mbu.
The protesters, who stormed the state capital as early as 6am in many buses, warned the Federal Government against heeding the demand of those perceived to be enemies of the President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, threatening that they would shut down government establishments in the state.
Inscription contained in some of their placards read: ‘Joseph Mbu, go ahead, restore peace in Rivers State’, ‘Amaechi’s government has failed’, ‘Wike, God bless you’, ‘A South-South man cannot betray his brother’, ‘Tinubu enough is enough’, ‘We will not support impunity’, and ‘Thank you IG for leaving Mbu for us’.
All the protesters coming from different areas converged on the popular GRA Junction, by Port Harcourt-Aba Road in the state capital.
