– Mohammed Abacha arrested
The Supreme Court on Friday, January 17, 2014, stated that Mohammed Abacha, son of the late former Head of State, General Sani Abacha, must be arrested and returned to an Abuja High Court and face his trial over allegations of theft instituted against him by the Federal Government of Nigeria.
Abacha is currently facing a 123-count charge leveled against him by the Federal Government of Nigeria, wherein he was alleged to be in possession of stolen property belonging to the Federal Government.
The property were allegedly stolen by his late father, Gen. Abacha, Nigeria’s former Head of State.
Abacha’s attempts to foil the trail failed at Court of Appeal before heading for the apex court.
In it’s verdict, the apex court, however, submitted that immunity does not extend beyond the tenure of office and that even if the late head of state were alive, he could have been prosecuted for a criminal offence, not to talk of his son, who has never been a State Leader.
Therefore, Mohammed Abacha has to go and face his trial at the Abuja court.
