Court remands man for murder


The Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court has remanded 21-year-old Chika Emechita in custody for the alleged murder of Obinna Azomba.

The incident happened at Lekki Garden Estate, Ikate Elegushi, Lagos, on August 30, 2014.

Chika and Obinna, 24, were said to have been construction workers where the incident happened.

Our correspondent learnt that they had an argument which degenerated into a fight.

The deceased was said to have used a plank to hit the defendant on the head and when the defendant retaliated, the deceased died in the process.

Emechita was arraigned on one count of murder.

The charges read in part, “That you, Chika Emecheta, on August 30, 2014 at about 5am, at Lekki Garden Estate, Ikate Elegushi-Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did unlawfully kill one Obinna Azomba, aged 24 years, by hitting him with a plank on his head and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State Nigeria, 2011.

His plea was not taken.

The magistrate, Mrs. O.N. Ojuromi, ordered the defendant to be remanded in custody.

The case was adjourned till November 3, 2014.
