A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos on Wednesday sentenced a 26-year-old man, John Daniel, to a two-year prison term for unlawfully dealing in 14.3 kilogrammes of cannabis.
The trial judge, Justice Ibrahim Buba, said Daniel was convicted based on his own admission of the crime and the evidence tendered by the prosecution.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency had arraigned the convict on one count bordering on the alleged crime.
The convict was said to have been apprehended with the contraband on September 23, 2013 in Lekki, Lagos.
Daniel, who appeared in court without a legal representation, maintained his earlier plea, but pleaded with the court to be lenient with him.
Buba consequently sentenced him to two years imprisonment to commence from the day of his arrest.
The judge said, “The court has considered the convict’s plea for mercy and the fact that the convict is remorseful; the 26-year-old convict will be given another chance in life to turn a new leaf. Accordingly, the convict is hereby sentenced to a two-year term of imprisonment with effect from September 23, 2013, the day of his arrest.”
The judge ordered the NDLEA to destroy the the exhibit recovered from the convict.
